US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs could cover eggs that are imported to facilitate the lack of delivery, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollin said on Thursday that industry experts could raise prices, just as they have begun to fall from record.

Rollin Fox News said in an interview that tariffs for egg imports are possible and negotiations with the affected countries are being held. The US has increased the import of eggs from Turkey, Brazil and South Korea, trying to increase stocks related to the ongoing bird flu outbreak, which has killed nearly 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds since 2022.

The new US initial tariff would affect imports from Turkey and Brazil, and South Korea is facing a 26% tariff, according to the White House released figures.

If the eggs are charged, manufacturers who import them into foods should either be absorbed or transferred to consumers, said Greg Tyler, Executive Director of the US Poultry and Egg Export Council.

“As a result, you will see the rise in the prices of processed eggs here in the United States,” he said.

The US Department of Agriculture did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

Egg prices have fallen in recent weeks, although wholesale price is still 60% increased by 60% last year-SUS 3 per dozen, according to USDA data. Weaker demand and sleeping in new bird flu have helped cool prices, analysts said.

“I’m not going to sit here and say,” Oh, everything will be perfect and prices will fall tomorrow, “because this is an indefinite time,” Rollin told Maria Bartiromo.

The Brazilian government said it assesses its reaction to Trump’s tariffs, while South Korea ordered emergency support measures to be affected by the affected sectors.

Imported eggs are usually brought into the US on ships, transported to recycling facilities and then unloaded by hand, said Brian mosciogiuri, egg supplier eggs unlimited global trading strategist.

“There are more cost -related costs, and now you are supplemented by tariffs,” he said. “It makes everything more expensive and makes imports that are much less likely to have a big impact.”

The US imported more than 1.6 million tens of consumer quality chicken eggs in January and February, mainly from Turkey, according to USDA data.
