Galal Jafai’s top three wins

By Declan Taylor

Galal Jafai takes on Sunny Edwards tonight in Birmingham to finally make his mark on the professional game. Beating Edwards would definitely be his best win, but what has been his best win so far?

CARLOS VADO BAUTISTA, 2/27/22, London – TKO 5

Having won a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, Jafai turned around to much fanfare and was dropped in the deep end in his 10-round debut against the tough Carlos Vado Bautista, who had a winning record. But Jafai clearly wanted to make a statement and did so by knocking out the Mexican visitor for the first four rounds before his corner took him out after 2:11 of the fifth round.

TOMMY FRANK, 19.8.23, Birmingham – TKO 1

Former British champion Tommy Frank was expected to challenge the undefeated Yafai, but he fell within 30 seconds of a thunderous right hook. Frank managed to beat the count, but Jafai didn’t budge and continued to unload with both hands. The towel was already in by the time referee John Latham decided to throw it out with just 100 seconds left.

AGUSTIN GAUTO, 6/4/24, Las Vegas – TKO 9

There could be some big nights in Las Vegas later in Jafai’s career and he made sure his Sin City debut ended in style against 21-1 Argentinian Agustin Gaut. The Brit also had to deal with a cut from an accidental headbutt in the sixth, but that threw him off course a bit. Jafai kept the pace high throughout and Gauto looked exhausted when the stoppage came with 20 seconds left in the eighth, when referee Raul Caiz Jr. stepped in to stop what had become all one-way traffic for Jafai.
