Floyd Schofield sent an email from his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, to prove that his February 22nd fight with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson is still on.
In a post on X, Schofield compared himself to the young man Muhammad Alipointing out that he was 22 when he beat Sonny Liston in 1964. However, Schofield leaves out that Ali was a 1960 Olympic gold medalist and didn’t struggle to beat ham and eggers like he did.
Ali dominated his competition before fighting an old-looking Liston, who looked much older than his 32 years. In contrast, Schofield went to the death with no-contest Rene Tellez Giron, dropping him and eating a lot of shots in their November 2 fight.
In an email, De La Hoya told Schofield Sr. that he believes in his son, Kid Austin, but wants to continue to build him up so he can win a world title. He doesn’t want Schofield to fight Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) and risk being beaten by his lack of experience.
At the end of the email, De La Hoya said, “If you say to me, ‘Make it happen,’ then I will do it.”
Schofield said at the time: “We accept the challenge.
So, unless De La Hoya refuses to take part in the Shakur-Schofield fight, it looks like it could happen on February 22nd.
Earlier tonight, De La Hoya hinted on his Clap Back Thursday that a fight between Shakur would not happen. He chided Shakur’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, for choosing his 22-year-old prospect, Schofield, over the other top contenders, Frank Martin or Raymond Muratala.
Interestingly, De La Hoya didn’t mention Edwin De Los Santos, the fighter who gave Shakur HUGE trouble last year in November, forcing him to go 12 rounds and land more meaningful punches.
De Los Santos exposed Shakur, making him scared and showing that he is just a lightweight runner who won’t hold his ground unless his opponents are weak and slow.
This is a message from @OscarDeLaHoia It’s on @ShakurStevenson … you can’t run away from this.

Muhammad Ali was 22 years old when he defeated Sonny Liston in their World Heavyweight Championship boxing match in 1964. This information is consistent with the historical record, as Ali won the title by defeating Liston on February 25, 1964, when he was actually 22 years old. . This win…

Don’t call me wrong for what I already knew, I knew from the jump that no one left, let me get in the ring with that little kid.. I just called his bluff, that’s all! Murattalla will next, is Bob going to let his investment go against me? 🤔

I’m funny Turki, that’s not an excuse, he makes fights outside the house all the time.. Promoters don’t mind sending fighters to fight other promoters of fighters as long as it’s not against me! https://t.co/OSFuPaZeOD
