US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, the father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France.
Trump announced this in the Truth Social publication, calling Charles Kushner a “tremendous business executive, philanthropist and deal maker.”
Kushner is the founder of the real estate firm Kushner Companies. Jared Kushner is a former senior Trump adviser who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka.
Trump pardoned the elder Kushner in December 2020 after he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions years earlier.
Prosecutors alleged that after Charles Kushner discovered that his brother-in-law was cooperating with federal authorities in the investigation, he hatched a scheme of retaliation and intimidation.
Kushner hired a prostitute to lure his brother-in-law, then arranged to record the meeting with a hidden camera in a New Jersey motel room and send the recording to his own sister, the man’s wife, prosecutors said.
Kushner eventually pleaded guilty to 18 charges, including tax evasion and witness tampering. In 2005, he was sentenced to two years in prison, the most he could have received under a plea deal, but less than then-New Jersey U.S. Attorney and later governor and Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie.
Christie has blamed Jared Kushner for firing him from Trump’s transition team in 2016 and called Charles Kushner’s wrongdoing “one of the most heinous and disgusting crimes I prosecuted when I was US attorney.”
Trump and the elder Kushner knew each other through real estate circles, and their children married in 2009.
